The Successful of Surabaya City Governemnt in Implementing the Green City Concept

It's not easy to implement the green city concept in a big city in Surabaya. With the passage of time and the development of green open spaces, the temperature gradually drops to 28-29 degrees Celsius. This green open space continues to be added, until one day, the temperature in Surabaya can reach 22 degrees Celsius. That is the policy target set by the mayor of Surabaya in 2019. The different parks are also the main attraction in Surabaya. The Surabaya City Cleanliness and Green Open Space Service (Dinas Kebersihan dan Ruang Terbuka Hijau/DKRTH) stated that the area of green open space (Ruang Terbuka Hijau) in the capital city of East Java province has now reached 7,356.24 hectares or 21.99 percent of the city area.

In Surabaya there are as many as 573 city parks spread over various points which of course can reduce air pollution and lower the temperature in the city of Surabaya. The total area of parks throughout Surabaya until 2020 has reached 1,651.24 hectares. The parks built in Surabaya have different themes and sizes. There is a park which is a former waste disposal site (TPA) located in the Keputih area, namely Harmoni Park. The problem of waste management is complex. The Surabaya government has managed waste well, forming a waste bank that is managed at the citizen level. There are already 533 waste banks and have distributed 10,000 villages each to 500 villages participating in SSC (Surabaya Smart City) 2020, in order to reduce household waste. Also, there are eight locations for Temporary Waste Disposal Sites (TPS), namely 3 R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in several places in Surabaya, there are also 28 compost houses at various points in Surabaya. Villages in Surabaya are also taught how to process waste, so that not too much waste goes to the Benowo Final Disposal Site (TPA) even though population growth is increasing which results in an increase in the volume of solid waste, household waste, hotel waste, restaurant, industrial and industrial waste. so on.

 The air temperature in the city of Surabaya is reaches 30 degrees celsius. The presence of city parks can reduce the temperature and pollutant levels. The number of vehicles has contributed to the increase in air pollution. This is always controlled by emission tests conducted by the Surabaya Transportation Service. For those who do not pass the emission test, they will not be given a license to operate. The city of Surabaya is also able to improve environmental quality through the green community participation movement with the 3R movement and also the Waste to Energy program using the gasification method. Surabaya has also developed the concept of Green Transportation and Green Buildings. We have also used solar power plants at 74 intersection points. We continue to develop these various innovations, the main goal is to provide the best for the people of Surabaya. This success is supported by a task force that is divided into each district, there are east, west, north and south regions. Each rayon has its own team in charge of maintaining and caring for each park. This team is in charge of replacing dead plants or flowers.
