Digital Platform-Based Online Transportation in Indonesia

There has been such a huge leap of technological development and transformation that has influenced the whole transportation sector around the world. Several countries in Asia, Europe and America have taken strategic policies to regulate online transportation. Transportation is no longer about business but investing over passenger experience. It means that modern transportation issues have challenges to overcome: investing in infrastructure to support quality and capacity, at the same time investing in digital infrastructure to improve the passenger experience. Previously used transportation systems in majority and the one which recently used depends on inventions delivered during the industrial revolution. It's getting abandoned day by day. The adoption of application-based technology in transportation needs to be continuously developed to create prosperity for all. Regulations in the application of transportation technology need to be made not to be politicized or to protect certain interests.

The development of the digital transportation technology revolution has an impact on people's transportation patterns. Before there was application of transportation technology, government and private in the world's big cities, serving and meeting the transportation needs of the individual and mass public. Prior to the existence of transportation technology application, both the world's megapolitan government and private parties served and met the transportation needs of the individual and mass public. The government cooperates with the private sector (taxi operators) to accommodate taxis as providers by the terms of convenience, while the government uses mass public transportation as well. The public transportation doesn’t come up with door to door service in particular. In contrast to taxis which serve the course of upper middle class people who put convenience and safety as their priority. The cost of obtaining convenience in taxi services is expensive. Meanwhile, people who use public transportation such as commuter trains or buses cost less. In conclusion, the future transportation landscape in Indonesia is collectively characterized by more mobility services.

The presence of application-based transportation as a form of transportation based on mobile phone applications is a factual breakthrough for door-to-door travel at relatively low costs. Ever since those services operating in Indonesia, large and medium-sized cities have responded rapidly. The operation of the online mode of transportation set out a social and economic impact. Breaking the deadlock of people who have been unable to access low-cost transportation. This transportation is also successful in delivering/moving passengers/goods from one place to another with relatively short travel time.

The results of the 2017 UI Demographic Institute research show that there are positive impacts from the presence of this online mode of transportation. It has even contributed to the state budget (APBN). Empowering MSME partners, the national economy and society, improving the quality of life for driver partners and consumers. Especially for Gojek, which has contributed 8.2 trillion to the country through driver-partner income. Nonetheless, here comes up the unresolved problem with the presence of this mode of transportation, namely incomplete regulations. This will disrupt or have a negative impact on the economic and social sectors. Therefore, it is necessary to have regulations that have permanent and binding legal force and incorporate the principles of justice. This counted as something crucial so that the sustainability of this transportation and its users can continue. The presence of ojol has a negative impact on transportation modes that previously existed and were not based on application/online technology. The implication is that the operation of ojol and regulations that are seen as protecting the existence of ojol have resulted in demonstrations from conventional taxi drivers/drivers.
